Board of Directors 2009

 

The twelve volunteers serving as our Board of Directors are drawn from throughout the Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands. Working on the Board of Directors offers a wonderful chance for people to give back to the community in a highly rewarding and meaningful way.

 

Dawn Fyke, Chair

 

 

Dawn was born in Saskatchewan and has lived in Vancouver, Edmonton, Fredericton and Regina, prior to Saanich and the Saanich Peninsula, for the past twenty-four years. Dawn is married to Ken, and they have two sons, Derek and Aaron, and four grandsons. She received an award from Parent Cooperative Preschools International, for leadership in linking senior citizens to preschoolers, during her term as chapter president. A nurse with a degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Dawn received the Most Distinguished Graduate award from the University of Regina and wrote "Hospital Based Health Promotion" based on her research at the University of Victoria. Dawn has over forty years of experience in Canadian health services, including clinical practice, continuing education, occupational health and safety, policy development and management in provincial governments, universities, hospitals and community health services. Prior to retiring in 2002, Dawn managed Home Nursing Care, followed by Continuing Care Systems, in community and home health in the Capital.

 

 

Bob Cronin, Vice Chair

 

 

 

 

 

 

Bob is married to Charlotte, a Registered Nurse. They have two daughters, Emily and Clare, and three grandchildren. Bob and Charlotte have lived in Esquimalt for thirty-five years. Bob is a retired provincial public servant, having worked many years in the Social Services Ministry and the Ministry of Health at the senior level. He has a Masters of Social Work from UBC and a Certificate in Conflict Resolution from the Justice Institute. He served as a Public Representative on the Medical Service Commission for eight years.

 

 

Sue Hodgson, Treasurer

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sue is the former publisher of the Peninsula News Review and the current publisher of Boulevard Magazine. She, her husband and their two school-aged children live in Sidney.

 

 

Penny Thomsen, Secretary

 

 

 

 

 

 

Penny and her husband moved to North Saanich in 2006, after she retired as the Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. Penny was also involved as President and Board Chair of the Local Health Integration Network in Central Toronto.

 

 

Don Laughton,

Member-at-Large

 

 

 

 

 

 

Don and his wife Donna have lived in Victoria since 1972. They have two daughters and one granddaughter. A retired Crown Prosecutor, he is a past Director of United Way, SPCA, Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, and a past Chair of Shawnigan Residents Association. Don has volunteered with Crime Stoppers, Children’s International Summer Villages, Trackshoes, Capital Mental Health Association and Victim Services.

 

 

Glenn Gallins

 

 

 

 

 

 

Glenn has been a resident of North Saanich for thirty years. He has degrees from the University of Wisconsin, the University of British Columbia and the University of London. He is married to Cathy Eakins. They have four children (Graeme, Kelly, Shannon and Colin) who have all pursued careers as physicians. Glenn is a lawyer, a member of the University of Victoria Faculty of Law and is the Director of the Law Centre Clinical Law Program. He has been appointed a Queen’s Counsel. He is also the winner of two of the University of Victoria’s most prestigious awards: the University Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Community Leadership Award. Glenn has been very active in community affairs and has sat on the boards of numerous volunteer agencies. He is a Past Commander of the Saanich Peninsula Squadron of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons and a former Vice Chair of the Capital Health Board.

 

 

Peter Kappele

 

 

 

 

 

 

Peter has lived on Pender Island for twenty years since retiring in Toronto from the CBC as an Executive Producer in TV News and Current Affairs. Peter has served on the Board of the Pender Island Health Care Society for many years and, as current President of the Board, he presided over the opening of a $1.4-million expansion to the Pender Health Clinic. He is a former Chair of the Board of Governors of Camosun College and a past director of the former Capital Health Region. Peter is a long-serving Past Chair, and currently is Vice Chair, of the Board of the Pender Island Fire Rescue Society and is former President of the Board of the Association of TV Producers and Directors in Toronto. Peter is married to Wendy Hacking and his daughter Danielle, a CBC radio journalist, resides in Toronto.

 

 

Doug Macfarlane

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Doug is a retired school principal who has served on a number of committees with the Saanich School District. He and his wife live in Saanichton.

 

 

Ken Jackson

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ken retired from British Petroleum as an executive. In his career, Ken and his family lived in various international locations, including the UK, Egypt and Russia. He and his wife Pam are now full-time residents of Salt Spring Island, where they are involved in the community, particularly with the Greenwoods Foundation.

 

 

Ian Boorman

Ian is a second-generation Victorian. He attended Oak Bay High School and the University of Victoria. He is married to Sandy and they have two sons, Michael and Dean, and three grandchildren. Ian is the past president of Boorman Investment Co. Ltd, which is a family business with three divisions: Real Estate, Insurance and Property Management. He is also a Past Commodore of the Capital City Yacht Club, a member of the Uplands Golf Club, a member of the Victoria Entrepreneurial Club and a past director of the Victoria Real Estate Board.

 

 

Deborah Shera

Deborah is currently Vice President of Public Sector for EDS Canada and has served in various capacities within the health care sector, including Assistant Deputy Minister and Chair of the Medical Services Commission. Deborah has also served on the Boards of the Capital Health Region and Oak Bay Lodge.

 

 

 

Keith Rolfe

Currently retired, Keith and his wife Angela reside in Sidney. Keith worked as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte & Touche from 1977 to 1991, his final year as a National Partner. Highlights of his professional and community activities include: acting as a lay bencher for the Law Society of Alberta; serving on the Police Advisory Committee for the Town of Sidney, chairing the Eye Care Disciplines Advisory Committee (Alberta), chairing the Persons with Developmental Disabilities Boards at both the Calgary and Alberta level, and hearing appeals under the Health Professions Act in Alberta. Keith has also been a volunteer with Beacon Community Services, assisting with tax preparation.

 

 

Isobel Mackenzie, Ex Officio

 

 

 

 

 

 

Isobel has been the Executive Director for Beacon Community Services for more than thirteen years. She has an extensive background in community services and has spent her career in the public and not-for-profit sector. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Victoria, a Certificate in Health Care Leadership from the University of Toronto and a Masters of Science degree in Public Policy with the University of London. Isobel has worked for the provincial government with the Ministry of Finance and was a senior research analyst with the Economic Development Commission. She has published papers on the retirement industry in Victoria and on sick leave utilization in the home support industry. In addition to he professional work, Isobel has served her community on a wide number of initiatives and has served as a publicly-elected School Trustee for the Greater Victoria School District.
